Majka budi radu, u debelom ladu; u debelom ladu. Pobegle bi i krave u debele šikare; u debele šikare. —- Mother wakes up Rado From a thick sleep. "Where are the sheep, Rado? No bell is heard. Why is your hair disheveled? Why are you barefoot, Rado?" The cows too would run away into thick thickets; into thick thickets.

--- Oh, Kupalo flew through our village. A pillar of smoke, Thunder cries. Ivan’s head Caught aflame. Pillar of smoke, Thunder cries. Through our village – Oh, they carried a tree; Oh they carried a tree. Stay, lad, do not go! The doves are on the oak. On Ivana Kupala (Midsummer Eve), They made merry in the streets! Oh green, green sycamore! She was at “Kupala” [She] forgot her shirt, Forgot her shirt. Stay, lad, do not go! The doves are on the oak. On Ivana Kupala (Midsummer Eve) They made merry in the streets! Oh green, green sycamore!

My mother gave birth to me on holy Sunday. She gave me a bitter fate, I cannot do anything – I will carry this bitter fate to sell at the trade-market. But no one buys my fate I'll take the bitter fate from the market to home Yes, I'll take off this bitter fate, from the shoulders down to the floor. Oh, stay down you bitter fate, god forbid you stand up I hope you don’t rise up

A cuckoo flew over my house, sat on the guelder-rose (viburnum) plant beside it, and began to cry. O, why, cuckoo – oh, why do you sing? Maybe within me, you sense that there is still something good. O, God, my God – what have I done? The Kozak [frontier-steppe cowboy] has a wife, and I have come to love him. The Kozak has a wife, and two children too! And these two children, dark-haired, just like their father.

—- Mountain beyond the mountain, misfortune after misfortune, my mother married me off young. My mother gave me away and told me that I should honor my dear for all of eternity. But this unloved one did not love my family, he does not allow me to roam the waters. Allow me, my partner, to roam the waters, to roam the waters to go to my family. I won’t go myself and I won’t allow you, because you will tell your family about our disagreement. If they start asking, I will keep silent – if the tears flow, then I will leave the house. Father did not ask, mother did not ask, when the tears gushed out and I left the house. When the tears gushed out and I left the house, then my mother and father understood.

А в тії церковці аж троє віконців А в перше віконце сходить ясне сонце А в друге віконце сходить ясен місяць А в третє віконце ангели літають Ангели літають книги розгортають Книги розгортають і в книгах читають --- Oh in the forest, in the woods, a small church stood Refrain: Rejoice! Оh rejoice, Еarth, the Son of God is born! In that church there are three windows In the first window the bright sun rises In the second window the bright moon rises In the third window angels fly Angels fly, opening books They open up books, reading from them

And the rabbi is teaching little children, The alphabet. [See, children, remember, dear ones, What you learn here; Repeat and repeat yet again, "Komets-alef: o!"] Learn, children, with great enthusiasm. So I instruct you; He among you who learns Hebrew pronunciation faster – He will receive a flag. Learn children, don't be afraid, Every beginning is hard; Lucky is the one who has learned Torah - what more does a person need? When you grow older, children, You will understand by yourselves, How many tears lie in these letters, And how much lament. When you, children, will bear the Exile And will be exhausted, May you derive strength from these letters, Look in at them!

--- Our mother was at the market, Oh, oak, dear oak, it was at the bazaar! She charmed up a gentleman, Oh, oak, dear oak, the gentleman was charmed by her! She was washing up ahead of seeing him, Oh, oak, dear oak, she was washing up! From the trough she was washing herself, Oh, oak, dear oak, she was washing herself! I could see through the shutter, Oh, oak, dear oak, she could see it! Cursed mirror, completely unseeing! Oh, oak, dear oak, it is quite the faulty mirror! And I will break that mirror into pieces too, Oh, oak-club, and I will break it into pieces! And I will go to my cavalier unwashed, Oh, oak-club, I will go unwashed!

--- Alone I walk out on the road. Amidst the fog, the stone path glistens and glows. The night is still. The desert harkens to God, And each star speaks amongst its kin. The sky is grand and wondrous, And the earth sleeps in azure majesty… Why is my life so difficult and painful? What do I wait for? What regrets do I keep? No longer do I seek anything from life, And the past no longer stands to give me pause; All that I seek is freedom and great stillness! All that I wish for is to sleep and to forget. But not the cold sleep of the grave… I’d wish for centuries of rest, Such that in my chest napped life’s great forces; such that in breathing, quietly heaved my breast. Such that all night, all day, I hear and cherish A sweet quicksilver voice that sings to me of love, And all above me, stuck forever green, A tall dark oak stands rustling and bends.

Spod tego jawora woda spływa, Spod tego jawora woda spływa. Chodźze się jyj napić, Kochanecko moja Bedzies zdrowo. Nie bedem, Janicku, tyj wody pić, Nie bedem, Janicku, tyj wody pić. Ta bystro wodzicka Mogłaby mi z licka Krasę zrucić. — Under the sycamore tree, water flows. Come have a drink, my darling – you will be healthy. I will not drink this water, Jánošík – I will not drink this water. This vibrant spirit will destroy my thirst. Drink this water, young girl, and love will arise in you, brave maiden, for a young boy.

about

NYC's Zelenaya merges the haunting vocal harmonies of Eastern European polyphonic folk singing with the intensity of sludge, doom, and death metal. The combination pays homage to the traditions, magic, and stories transmitted in these songs, while reimagining their context and form.

“Folk Songs” is unlike any other metal record you’re going to hear this year, mainly because there’s not bound to be another band collecting classic folk songs and turning them into crushers.” - Meat Mead Metal

Our music plays with melodies from different sources, pursuing the joy of putting them together in unexpected and exploratory ways. While mindful of the origins of our source material, we embrace the spirit of living folk music to reframe these songs within heavy metal instrumentals and spark something sublime through the synthesis of these two very special and different styles.

This album documents the last few years of work and the material we’ve put together through our collective exploration of these beloved and complementary genres.

“The adaptation of the folk songs to heavy metal stylings proves to be very impressive […] The pacing and the moods of the songs vary, sometimes jubilant or fierce, sometimes beleaguered or mournful, and sometimes heroic or simply devastated. They’re arranged on the album in a way that makes the most of the emotional contrasts, and many of the songs embody those contrasts within themselves.” - No Clean Singing

“The combination of folk and metal is alluring. It feels ritualistic and powerful, calling upon ancestors and giving a passionate performance. “Folk Songs” is goosebump-inducing and beautiful.” - Nine Circles
